The Data Vault Handbook - Concepts and Applications

4.1. DISCIPLINED AGILE Scott Ambler, co-creator of Disciplined Agile, defines it as “an iterative and incremental (evolutionary) approach to software development which is per- formed in a highly collaborative and evolving manner by self-organizing teams within an effective governance framework with ‘just enough’ ceremo- ny that produces high quality solutions in a cost effective and timely manner which meets the changing needs of its stakeholders”. Agile methodologies aim to help teams balance goals, team capabilities, and delivery timelines in the most efficient way possible. The key to delivering value with every sprint is identifying which tasks are critical to focus on and which are “good enough” to move forward, allowing for continuous prog- ress. The delicate balance between quality, speed, and adaptability forms the foundation of Agile. However, evolving into Disciplined Agile is not an overnight transformation; it’s a journey that builds on the core principles of Agile and Scrum while expanding their scope to better fit complex organiza- tional needs.

“ The delicate balance between quality, speed, and adaptability forms the foundation of Agile.”

This approach emphasizes several key principles to guide teams toward a more disciplined way of working. First, teams are encouraged to take a more holistic view. People, processes, and technologies need to interact efficiently to create truly effective solutions in an enterprise-aware way avoiding creating siloes. Collabora- tion is also central to Disciplined Agile— teams must work closely together, con- tinuously learning and adapting as they progress.
