BUILDING AN EFFECTIVE DATA WAREHOUSE FOR A CONSULTING COMPANY

INTRODUCTION The client is a consulting company for capital investment processes and profit-oriented risk management. The company is active in asset/liability analyses, strategic capital investment planning, risk management, organization of capital investments, manager selection and IT/ process consulting. CASE DESCRIPTION Data Vault 2.0 was necessary for the client as the old Data Warehouse was missing necessary compo- nents and was not able to fulfill the requirements needed to manage the data efficiently. The client also wanted to boost performance and save on time by upscaling their architecture. In addition, the existing model was not able to integrate all the necessary sources well, which was causing an issue for the client and resulted in delays. One of the most significant aspects of Data Warehouse is that it should process all the inquiries faster than its alternatives and in a more secure way without being prone to any errors that could occur. The existing Data Warehouse was missing important concepts to satisfy these requirements. Moreover, the existing warehouse had a significant auditability issue. An existing data warehouse structure relied on extensive data pre-processing, which was causing inefficiency in terms of cost and time. On the other hand, Data Vault stores raw data “as-is” without applying business rules and it has a separate layer for applying rapid-changing business rules without issues. As a result, re-engineering was not needed in Data Vault which was a benefit for the client due to the fact that re-engineering was a significantly time-consuming process. Furthermore, data transformation hap- pens on-demand and the results are available for viewing in a department-specific data mart when using Data Vault. As a result, the client was able to generate customized reports in a user-friendly way which was not feasible in the existing Data Warehouse. Another issue was the lack of compatibility of existing methods. Using an automation tool was very important for the client as it was one of the necessary methods to save time and cost and helped avoid errors instead of doing repetitive and monotone processes manually every time.
