IMPROVEMENT OF A DATA WAREHOUSE BASED ON THE DATA VAULT 2.0 PILLARS

INTRODUCTION The customer, a central funding institute of a German federal state, needed support for dif- ferent problems they were facing with their Data Vault 2.0 implementation. CASE DESCRIPTION As an institution under public law, it supports the federal state in fulfilling its public duties. This re- lates to the allocation of subsidies in the areas of the economy, labor market, housing, infrastructure and urban development. The company wanted to develop a new enterprise data warehouse (EDW) based on Data Vault 2.0 with the goal of replacing the existing legacy system. The new EDW aimed to integrate the data of the reporting and application system and later also of the risk controlling one central system. During the review, some deviations from the Data Vault 2.0 standards, as well as other issues, were found. On the one hand, the loading of the enterprise data warehouse (EDW) showed some incon- sistencies, as well as performance problems. Also an automation of the processes was not available, as well as a corresponding metadata management. Furthermore, a business vault was completely missing. Therefore Scalefree was commissioned to review the current status of the project and rec- ommend actions to minimize the risks and find out the issues and problem areas that do not follow the Data Vault 2.0 standard. A Data Vault Review project at a customer’s site was targeting companies who have already started to implement Data Vault and were having problems and issues with the correct implementation as well. The assessment was performed on different consecutive days and focuses on the main pillars of

Data Vault 2.0: ● Architecture ● Model ● Methodology

- Implementation

Scalefree was able to enhance and automate the load architecture, removing load dependencies and improving the load performance by implementing the most up-to-date Data Vault 2.0 best practices. Also metadata management was added and a Business Vault was implemented in the customer’s enterprise data warehouse project. Through the detailed results of the review, the company was able to successfully solve its problems. This resulted in lower costs and time savings through the automation of the processes and improved performance. These led to facilitation of maintainability and further developments. Overall, this ensured information quality and enabled faster reaction times to a changing market or reporting environment.
