INTRODUCTION A leading global insurance provider wanted to improve data management and reduce operational costs using Data Vault practices as quickly as possible. Scalefree provided the required expertise support. CASE DESCRIPTION A leading global insurance provider sought to enhance the agility, efficiency, and effectiveness of its data management and governance practices. Previously utilizing an Informatica-based solution for Master Data Management (MDM), alongside a Data Vault-based Data Warehouse supported by Snowflake as its Data Platform, the client aimed to transition its MDM solution to align with Data Vault 2.0 methodologies within the Data Warehouse framework. By collaborating with Scalefree Consultants and the insurance provider’s employees, the solution architecture was developed and later implemented with an agile approach. The old MDM solution extracted golden records from different sources using Informatica MDM solution, DB2 as a database outside of Data Vault, which is further used for reporting. The new solution aimed to replicate this functionality on a more cost-effective Snowflake Data Platform, enabling the client to retire tools and services such as Informatica and DB2. This would help the client to reduce its operational cost significantly. Additionally, the updated solution promised enhanced agility, scalability, and efficiency.
The migration process involved several key steps. Initially, raw data was uploaded into the Raw Vault, followed by the replication of business rules and transformations previously handled by Informatica using SQL scripts to populate the Business Vault. Leveraging the belmap database, address verification and standardization were achieved using a dynamic SQL script, replacing Informatica’s Address Doctor service and yielding outstanding outcomes. Subsequently, a match and merge algorithm was devised to establish the Master Data Hub layer, thereby finalizing the transition. Moreover, the solution adhered to GDPR standards in handling data, in accordance with Data Vault 2.0 practices. Following the implementation of the new MDM solution, thorough documentation was conducted, and its integration was seamlessly extended to encompass additional data sources. Dashboards previously reliant on the old MDM solution were rewired to the new Data Vault Master Data Management solution. The outcome surpassed initial expectations, culminating in the successful completion of the project well ahead of schedule.
