STREAMLINING DATA OPERATIONS: UNIFYING RETAIL AND WHOLESALE WITH DATA VAULT 2.0

INTRODUCTION In collaboration with Scalefree, a prominent European sportswear company embarked on a journey to consolidate its disparate data warehouses, harmonizing retail and wholesale operations for enhanced efficiency and insights. CASE DESCRIPTION For several years, a leading European sportswear company implemented Data Vault 2.0 in its retail sector in collaboration with Scalefree. Previously, the data warehouses for retail (B2C) and wholesale (B2B) were operated separately. To recognize the benefits of a unified approach, they decided to consolidate into a single data warehouse going forward. The challenge was to harmonize the data from retail and wholesale, which meant significantly more effort in analysis due to multiple data warehouses. The project faced three main challenges: limited data access, integration complexities, and crucial but complex tasks of identifying and documenting business rules. Access was restricted to scripts and SQL statements from the existing Data Warehouse. Existing B2C Data Vault 2.0 structures needed evaluation for integration into wholesale operations, and identifying and documenting business rules was complex. The solution involved extracting all available metadata and preparing it for Scalefree’s TurboVault4dbt and DataVault4dbt tools. Using TurboVault4dbt enabled clear presentation of metadata, engaging business users in Data Vault 2.0 modeling early on. Despite lacking practical implementation, Scalefree effectively communicated the latest modeling progress and challenges to the client. The provided model and metadata sheet represented a working skeleton for the consolidated data warehouse.

At the project’s conclusion, the client received comprehensive documentation of all their metadata, including modeling. Additionally, graphical models were created for each data source, and all necessary business rules were documented and handed over. This served as a blueprint for the subsequent implementation project conducted in collaboration with Scalefree. The working skeleton not only represented a high-level but also a detailed blueprint of the future data warehouse, which could be used in the future to evaluate design questions and as an instruction for building a DWH. The technologies involved were dbt, datavault4dbt, and turbovault4dbt.
